Day at the Museum

Sponsored by Google, the Day at the Museum involved bringing over 600 students into the Science Museum as part of a school trip and encouraging them to return with their families.

The overarching aim of the programme was to ‘inspire the next generation of scientists’.

We specifically invited 10- to 11-year-olds (i.e. the last year of primary school) as we know this to be a very important age for engaging children with science.

We hosted four Days at the Museum in June 2015. Each day ran from 10.00 to 14.30. During the day, students were offered the opportunity to:

  • Meet real scientists and learn about how cutting-edge research is relevant to their lives
  • Enjoy a live interactive science show called It Takes Guts
  • Take part in a ‘great object hunt’ in the Museum
  • Visit Launchpad, the Museum’s most popular interactive gallery

At the end of each day all of the students were presented with a Science Museum goody bag and a Golden Ticket, which encouraged them to come back with up to four family members to watch a 3D film in the Museum’s IMAX Theatre.

As part of the project our in-house Audience Research team are conducting evaluation of the impact of the programme on students’ perceptions of science, scientists and the work they do.
