Doctoral Study with the Science Museums and Archives Consortium

The Science Museum Group coordinates the Science Museums and Archives Consortium (SMAC). The consortium is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and offers fully funded studentships for study towards a doctoral degree. The consortium includes:

Organisations

Studentships offered by the SMAC are all collaborative doctoral studentships, which means that our students work towards a doctoral degree with a UK university, and their research is supported by supervisors at both the university and the collaborating SMAC organisation.

Collaborative doctoral projects provide a special opportunity for students to work across university and research-led museums and archives environments and develop a wide range of skills alongside their study. Projects supported by the SMAC engage with interdisciplinary collections, develop innovative methodologies and address key issues relating to science’s role in past, present and future societies.

How to apply

Proposals for new studentships are made jointly by a member of staff within a SMAC organisation and a member of staff at a UK Higher Education Institution (HEI). Named students can also apply in collaboration with a full supervisor team. Projects can involve multiple SMAC organisations and partner organisations outside the SMAC.

Information about the application process, including research priorities and assessment criteria, can be found in our guidance document

Applications for projects beginning in the 2025/6 academic year are now closed. Information about projects recruiting students will be available in Spring 2025.

If you are interested in developing a studentship project, we encourage you to get in touch with the named contacts at each SMAC organisation in the first instance:
