PhD Studentships
Each year, the Science Museums and Archives Consortium opens a number of funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) studentships for applications. Projects are usually advertised in Spring each year, to begin in October or January of the following academic year. Recruitment is completed through the partner universities. We are also often involved in Collaborative Doctoral Award studentships. These projects may already be funded at the point of student recruitment, or may enter into funding competitions after a student is selected. Opportunities to study with the Science Museum Group or its SMAC partners will be advertised on this page.
We do not currently have any live opportunities. PhD projects starting in the 2026/7 academic year are expected to be advertised in Spring 2026.
PhD placements
The Science Museum Group often works with PhD students to develop PhD placement projects to contribute towards their professional development and skills-based training. These are tailored to the student’s interests and skills as well as SMG collections, expertise, and organisational needs. Currently, placements are only available to students who have financial support for professional development through their funding provider.
If you are interested in developing a placement project. please contact Laura Blair, Research Manager (Postgraduate and Skills): laura.blair@sciencemuseum.ac.uk.
